Arabesque Fountain Panel with Star Medallion

Undercut so deeply that the scrollwork stands clear of its own ground, this panel turns on an eight pointed star medallion with a small bronze spout at its heart. Tendrils and palmettes fall away from it in perfect mirrored pairs, and the whole field is framed here by painted tile borders in ochre and pale blue. Below, a wrought iron grille worn green with verdigris covers the drain in the stone. Photographed in place, it makes the case for Moorish carving as well as anything in the collection.
